Review of Season

1993-1994

As the season grinds reluctantly to a halt, it is time to draw breath and look both on what has been a truly monumental year for Campion Rugby and all involved. We can cite a regular fixture list which has produced just one loss and that in the first match of the season ; we played host and locked horns with South Africans, Australians (twice), Canadians and the Irish; and, of course, we had that exhilarating and memorable journey through the National School's Cup which saw us bow out of the semi-final stage. Surely this amounts to one of the most successful seasons in the School's history? Add to that the tremendous euphoria and enjoyment that the 1st XV's exploits have stirred up amongst all who followed our fortunes and you realise that seasons like these do not happen every year.

Yet is began with a loss, going down 10-7 to Hampton School: an inconspicuous start indeed to what was to turn out a great year. However, revenge would be sweet when we were to play them again in the National School's Cup Yet with the spectre of Kearsney College, South Africa, looming large, feelings were understandably taut: physically they were intimidating, but the match (and for that matter their performance in the pub afterwards) would prove that they were, above all, only human. We lost the match, but only courtesy of a last ditch try by the Kearsney winger; the score, 13-8. They returned home undefeated, the consensus of opinion being that we gave them their toughest match, most people who took part in that game would agree that they were the best side we played all season, with Hampton a close second. Most will also agree that they were the nicest, most down-to earth blokes too, which made hosting them a hugely enjoyable experience.

There followed a purple streak of 21 unbeaten games which seems a good moment to define what made our team so successful. Of course, you cannot build a good team without a good pack, and Campions was to prove irresistible throughout this period; a marriage of pure bulk and running skills, it was the basis of most victories. Individuals stand out for praise: Vin Ludden has a try tally that any wing would be proud of, despite being a 1 7 stone prop forward and Euan Gilmour, despite having the temperament of an 'Ozzy' surfer, managed to stay awake often and long enough to create a lasting impression with his running skills.

However contrary to some cruel rumour, Campion have not abandoned their flowing festival roots; the backs made their presence felt with some flowing, running rugby. Centre Kevin Sorrell was always conspicuous through this fierce tackling and winger Rob Maldonado grew in stature game by game. Yet as testimony to the all-round talents, the tries were evenly spread, every back scoring a hatful. The victories over the larger, more established schools as always gave cause for the greatest satisfaction in particular wins over Sevenoaks, Reigate and St. Josephs, all away from home.

December saw the arrival of two Australian sides, Townsville and Sydney Grammar Schools. Again, they were a pleasure to host; but this time they were both soundly beaten, 38-17 and 45-15 respectively. Nevertheless, a team from Cistercian College, Ireland, arrived in the New Year and beat a 2nd XV side apparently still suffering from acute over-exposure to Guinness.

But back to the National School's Cup. Way back in November a crushing 89-3 win sealed a return match against Hampton on home soil. Despite toiling uncharacteristically for much of the match, a moment of individual brilliance by Mike Leonard in the dying moments, diving over to score with half of the Hampton back line hanging from his body, proved the difference. Revenge was sweet and owed much to the support of those on the side-lines. Then came Chichester in the quarter final, an equally tense affair. We showed exceptional character and fight to come back from an early try and then hold off the marauding Chichester back line in the final moments. Again, victory was down to a fine moment of individualism from Kev Sorrell; angels sang above, cherubs strummed on their harps and the heavens poured as Sorrell outwitted the defence and ran fully fifty metres to score. A champagne moment for sure, and so Mr. Marmion's "Red and Black Army" marched on to Wolverhampton's Castlecroft Stadium for the semi-final where Sheffield's Mount St. Marys awaited us.

The match was played on March 13th - unfortunately we lost, going down 13-8 to a team who, remaining diplomatic, received the lion's share of the luck. An early Rob Maldonado score and a Steve Brook's penalty looked as though they might be enough to squeeze us through, but a gushing wind against in the second half blew the opposition to victory. Yet we could hold our heads up high on what was a great day for Campion Rugby. We did ourselves proud and the incredible support from the stand cannot go unmentioned, hundreds of followers making the journey North to cheer us on. One of the abiding memories of the season will be hearing the strains of 'Jerusalem' drifting across the pitch as the match was in progress. They did us proud.

And that, to date, was the season 1993-4. As I write, I am awaiting the impending arrival of a Canadian side from Edmonton, our final rugby match (the Old Boys match only loosely representative of the term 'rugby match'). Of course, individuals will have personal memories to cherish, but in a nutshell that is the season in general. Many thanks must be offered to all those who have contributed to such a find season, the players themselves, for their hard work and tremendous commitment, not just those from the 1st XV, but all the way down, all played their part; the parents and followers who braved all weather to give us their precious time and effort to draw the best from their charges and in particular Mr. Marmion whose commitment was undying and enthusiasm quite inspirational.

It was quite an adventure and now we are about to embark on another.
